Needle felting is an Art that gives YOU the control of the shrinkage or felting of your wool! Special needles with "barbs" on the sides are used to compress or felt the fiber into a flat piece of work! Felting needles come in assorted sizes or gauges and each gauge has a specific use - some will attach detail (eyes, patterns, beards, finishing texture), some will felt larger areas faster and some are best for detail work like nostrils on animals and mouths! There are felting tools that will hold up to 5 felting needles to allow you to felt large areas faster. The options are endless and when you get some experience and "become addicted" to felting, you may even want to make your own tools to hold the needles! What actually takes place in needle felting? Wool has microscopic "scales" that are along the length of the wool fibers. When these "scales" rub together, they lock & tangle. The locking of the "scales" pulls the fibers closer and the felting process begins.....remember those wool sweaters that your mother or grandma put in the washing machine by mistake? When the sweater was dry, it no longer fit you and it was usually thrown away - it was actually felted and could have been used to make a purse or applique piece to attach to another wool item, such as a wool jacket or bag! It was not the water temperature or the soap that did the felting (shrinkage), it was simply the agitation to the sweater while in the washing machine, the wool "scales" were being tangled - very simple! |
